Pay-by-phone technology may be making big moves with Google, Inc. (GOOG).

According to rumors, Google plans to begin testing its new mobile phone-based payment service in New York and San Francisco in the next four months. The system, developed by VeriFone Systems (PAY), will allow mobile phones equipped with near-field-communication (NFC) technology to simply tap the phone against the register to complete the transaction.

Stocks were gunning for what would have been a ninth day of a rally. What goes up must come down, eventually. Jobless claims were under 400,000 and at the lowest levels since summer of 2008. There were mixed reports that President Mubarek was stepping down, although a speech late in the day confirmed that he will just still not be running for office but will remain in charge for now.

Here were today’s unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow Jones 12,229.29 -10.60 (-0.09%)
S&P 500 1,321.87 +0.99 (0.07%)
Nasdaq 2,790.45 +1.38 (0.05%)

Friday was a day that felt more like a blast from the past rather than just another Friday in the markets. In short, it was a sea of red when it came to stocks. A less robust GDP figure was one thing, but the violence and rioting escalating in Egypt was much larger. Earnings also contributed some, but Friday was a day of geopolitics. Oil and gold were higher on geopolitical concerns.

Here were the unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow Jones 11,823.70 -166.13 (-1.39%)
S&P 500 1,276.38 -23.16 (-1.78%)
Nasdaq 2,687.06 -68.22 (-2.48%)

Verizon (VZ) logoVerizon Communications (VZ), first discussed here on February 12, 2009, at a price of $29.86, has pushed through $30 resistance with room to spare, and one could make the argument that VZ is overvalued at this stage.

But that’s not the argument favored here.

Look for slow growth/dividend play Verizon to post a 2% to 2.5% revenue gain in 2011, after flatish revenue in 2010, with data services being the key revenue increase driver. Meanwhile, Verizon’s landline business continues to provide revenue stability.
