As the battle over student loan reform heats up with news that the proposal will be included with health care legislation, the Sallie Mae PR/lobbying machine is ratcheting up its criticism of the plan.

According to the bill, the United States government would save taxpayers and borrowers billions of dollars by eliminating middlemen in the federal student loan program -- and offering the loans exclusively through the United States government. The savings could be used to increase financial aid for low-income students.

$75 Million in Drugs Stolen from Eli Lilly Warehouse

Eli Lilly (LLY) announced Wednesday that burglars broke into a Connecticut-based warehouse over the weekend and stole roughly $75 million in prescription drugs. According to police, the break-in happened either late Saturday or early Sunday. According to LLY, "dozens of pallets" of antidepressants were stolen, including Prozac, Cymbalta, Zyprexa (an anti-psychotic), and other medicines. The police called the theft a "well-planned event."

The company stated that it is working with the U.S. FDA Office of Criminal Investigations and other law enforcement officials. LLY's senior vice president of global equity noted that the company has "taken quick and appropriate actions to ensure the safety of our medicines." The company added that the "U.S. pharmaceutical distribution system is tightly controlled and monitored, making it extremely difficult for stolen product to make it to patients through legitimate channels."

As expected, OPEC left its production quotas the same on Wednesday, in what was, from a revenue standpoint, its easiest decision in many official meetings.

Further, even though OPEC is pumping about 2 million more barrels per day (bpd) than its 24.845 million bpd official quota, the market is not punishing the group for it. A combination of decent demand, a weak dollar, and global GDP growth has pushed oil prices to levels that are roughly double what they were a year ago. Oil late Wednesday traded down 3 cents to $82.67 per barrel.
